10 Useful Claude Prompts for K12 Teachers (Copy, Paste, Adapt)

Most teachers do not have a lesson-planning problem. They have a time problem.

Differentiation, mastery-based learning, small-group instruction — every teacher knows these work. What’s missing is the two hours on a Tuesday night to build three versions of the same worksheet. That gap between what good teaching asks for and what a school week actually allows is exactly what AI assistants are starting to close.

In July 2026, Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers, giving verified K-12 educators in the US free access to premium Claude capabilities, a library of teaching skills, and connections to standards-aligned curricula. Educators who sign up by June 30, 2027 get a full year of access, and a separate offering for schools and districts followed in August 2026.

But you don’t need a special program to get value out of this today. Any teacher with a Claude account can use the prompts below. The difference between a mediocre AI output and one you’d actually take into class is almost entirely in how you ask.

 

First: four rules that make every prompt better

Before the list, these four habits do more for output quality than any clever wording.

  1. Give it a role and a room. “You are a Grade 7 science teacher in a mixed-ability class of 42 students” produces very different output from “write a lesson plan.”
  2. Paste your real material. Your syllabus extract, your textbook page, your last worksheet. Claude works far better editing your context than inventing its own.
  3. State the constraints. Period length, board or standard, available materials, language, whether students have devices.
  4. Specify the output format. Table, one page, bullet points, student-facing vs teacher-facing. Otherwise you’ll get an essay when you wanted a handout.

And one non-negotiable, covered in detail at the end: never paste identifiable student information into any AI tool.

 

1. Build a lesson plan that is actually scaffolded

Most AI lesson plans are a list of activities with no learning logic underneath. Ask for the progression and you get something teachable.

You are an experienced Grade 6 mathematics teacher.

Plan a 40-minute lesson on [equivalent fractions] for a class of [45] students

with mixed readiness. Our board is [CBSE / state board / Common Core standard].

Structure it as:

– Learning objective in student-friendly language

– The 3 prerequisite skills students must already have, and a 2-minute check for each

– A 5-minute hook using a real-life example students in [Tamil Nadu] would recognise

– Guided practice with 3 worked examples that increase in difficulty

– Independent practice (6 questions, easy to hard)

– A 3-question exit ticket

– What I should do tomorrow if more than half the class gets the exit ticket wrong

Materials available: blackboard, chart paper, no student devices.

Why it works: asking for prerequisites and a contingency plan forces the model to think about sequence rather than filling a template.

 

2. Turn one worksheet into three

This is the single biggest time saver on the list. Differentiation is the practice teachers most want and least often have time for.

Here is a worksheet I use with my Grade 8 English class: [paste worksheet]

Create three versions of it:

– SUPPORT: for students reading two grade levels below. Same content and objective, but with a word bank, sentence starters, and shorter passages.

– ON-LEVEL: light edits only.

– STRETCH: same content, but questions require inference, comparison and justification rather than recall.

Keep the same question numbering across all three so I can run them

simultaneously without confusion. Add a one-page teacher key for all three.

Tip: the “same question numbering” line is what makes it usable in a real classroom — students don’t feel labelled and you don’t juggle three answer keys.

 

3. Generate a question bank with distractor reasoning

Bad multiple-choice questions have obviously wrong options. Ask Claude to justify each wrong answer and the quality jumps.

Create 15 multiple-choice questions on [photosynthesis] for Grade 7.

Split them: 5 recall, 5 application, 5 analysis.

For each question give:

– The four options

– The correct answer

– For each wrong option, the specific student misconception it would catch

Then flag the three questions most likely to reveal a genuine gap

in understanding rather than careless reading.

Why it works: distractors tied to misconceptions turn a test into a diagnostic. You learn why a student is wrong, not just that they are.

 

4. Level any text to your students’ reading ability

Every teacher has that one brilliant passage that’s pitched three years too high.

Rewrite the passage below at three reading levels: Grade 4, Grade 6 and Grade 8.

Rules:

– Keep every key term (bold them) — do not simplify away the vocabulary students need to learn

– Preserve the main argument and all factual content

– Shorter sentences and more concrete examples at lower levels

– After each version, list the 5 words a second-language learner

  would most likely stumble on, with simple definitions

5. Ask where your students will get stuck

An underrated use. Have Claude pre-mortem the lesson before you teach it.

I am teaching [subtraction with regrouping] to Grade 3 tomorrow.

List the 8 most common errors and misconceptions students have with this topic,

ordered by how frequently they occur. For each one:

– What the student’s incorrect reasoning actually is

– A diagnostic question that would expose it in under 30 seconds

– A short verbal explanation or model I could use to correct it on the spot

Do not give me a lesson plan. Just the error map.

Why it works: “Do not give me a lesson plan” keeps the output focused. Teachers who anticipate errors intervene faster than teachers who discover them while grading.

 

6. Draft a rubric you can defend to a parent

I am assigning a [group science fair project] to Grade 9.

Build a 4-level analytic rubric (Exemplary / Proficient / Developing / Beginning)

across these criteria: scientific method, data accuracy, presentation clarity,

teamwork.

Requirements:

– Descriptors must be observable and specific — no words like “good” or “poor”

– Each level should describe what the work looks like, not how much is missing

– Add a student-friendly version in simpler language I can hand out beforehand

– Total 100 marks; suggest weightage per criterion and justify it in one line each

Tip: ask for the student-facing version. Rubrics shared before the work is done improve results more than rubrics used only for grading.

 

7. Turn a grade into useful feedback

Here is an anonymised student essay: [paste, with all names removed]

Act as an experienced Grade 10 English teacher giving formative feedback.

Give me:

– Two specific strengths, quoting the exact lines that work

– The single highest-leverage improvement — one thing only

– Three concrete revision steps the student can act on this week

– A short comment (60 words max) written directly to the student in an

 encouraging but honest tone Do not assign a grade. Do not rewrite their work for them.

Why it works: “one thing only” is the key line. Feedback lists of twelve items get ignored; one prioritised improvement gets acted on.

 

8. Analyse exit tickets and plan tomorrow

Here are the de-identified results from today’s exit ticket

(Student 1, Student 2, … with their answers): [paste]

Tell me:

– Which specific sub-skill each wrong answer points to

– How the class splits into groups by what they need next

– A 15-minute reteach plan for tomorrow that targets the largest group

– A short extension task for the students who have mastered it

Keep the reteach plan to one page.

Important: strip names and roll numbers first. Use Student 1, Student 2. You lose nothing analytically and you protect your students.

 

9. Write the difficult parent message

Teachers spend a surprising amount of emotional energy on this. Claude is genuinely good at tone.

I need to inform a parent that their child has missed 6 homework submissions

this month and is falling behind in mathematics. The parent has previously

reacted defensively to feedback.

Write three versions of this message:

  1. Direct and factual
  2. Warm, opening with something genuine about the child’s strengths
  3. Collaborative, framed as “here is what we can try together”

Each under 150 words. Suitable for a school messaging app.

Suggest one specific action I can ask the parent to take at home.

Tip: three versions beats one. You pick the register that fits the family — which is a judgment only you can make.

 

10. Build the substitute plan you never have time for

The plan you write when you’re already ill is never the plan you’d want.

I teach Grade 5 [social studies], five periods a week.

Create an emergency substitute plan packet for three days that any teacher

could pick up cold.

For each day include:

– A 5-line summary of what the class is currently learning

– A self-contained, low-preparation activity requiring only a blackboard and printed handouts

– The handout itself, ready to print

– Answer key

– What the substitute should leave a note about for my return

Also include a one-page “how my class runs” sheet: seating, routines,

what to do about early finishers.

Tip: build this once at the start of term and keep it in your school’s shared drive. It is the highest-return hour you’ll spend all year.

 

Bonus: circulars, notices and announcements

Administrative writing eats teacher time quietly.

Draft a notice for parents about our [annual sports day on 14 December].

Include: date, reporting time, dress code, what to bring, transport arrangements,

and the deadline to confirm participation.

Give me:

– A formal version for the school circular

– A 60-word version for the parent app noticeboard

– A 25-word version for SMS

Tone: warm but clear. Bold anything a parent must act on.

If your school runs a digital noticeboard, this pairs neatly — you draft in seconds and publish to every parent in one go instead of sending paper slips home.

 

The ground rules on student data

This part matters more than any prompt.

Anthropic built Claude for Teachers with K-12 privacy in mind: training is switched off for verified teacher accounts, student information is covered by a K-12 Data Processing Addendum with FERPA-aligned protections, and the company is working with the American Federation of Teachers on a shared standard for safety and privacy in K-12 education. Whether and how educational data may actually be used is determined by district and state policy — and using identifiable student information requires authorisation from the school or district.

For everyone else, on a regular account, the rule is simple:

  • Never paste names, admission numbers, photos, addresses, phone numbers, health information or disciplinary records.
  • De-identify first. Student 1, Student 2, Student A. Analysis works exactly as well.
  • You are the final reviewer. Every lesson plan, grade comment and parent message goes out under your name. Claude drafts; you decide.
  • Check the facts. Dates, formulas, historical claims and local curriculum specifics still need your eye.
  • Follow your school’s policy. If your institution hasn’t written one yet, that conversation is worth starting.

Anthropic also released a free, model-agnostic AI Fluency course for PK-12 teachers, co-created with Teach For America, covering which classroom tasks AI suits and how to use it responsibly with students. It’s a good starting point for a staff room session.

 

Where this fits with your school system

Prompts save you the drafting time. What they don’t do is get the output in front of students and parents.

That’s the other half of the job — and it’s where a school management platform earns its place. Lesson plans need to sit in a timetable. Rubrics need to feed report cards. Circulars need to reach every parent, not just the ones whose child remembered the paper slip.
